Understanding Our Approach

Q. What does “ceremonial grade” mean?

A: “Ceremonial grade” isn’t a regulated term in Japan, but it’s widely recognized in the matcha industry to indicate higher-quality matcha intended for traditional preparation. At RYEA, we use the term with care and purpose. Our matcha is made from first harvest, shade-grown leaves from the Kagoshima region—renowned for producing exceptional tea. We only label a product “ceremonial grade” if it meets our high standards for flavor, color, and aroma. It’s our way of helping customers identify matcha that’s smooth, vibrant, and enjoyable on its own.

Q. Where does RYEA matcha come from? Is it single origin or a blend?

A: RYEA matcha is a blend sourced from top-tier farms in the Kagoshima region of Japan. We blend to create a consistent, balanced flavor profile that combines the best characteristics of several small farms. This approach highlights the richness of Kagoshima’s terroir while offering a smooth, approachable matcha for both new and seasoned drinkers. A single-origin matcha is currently in development for those interested in exploring the unique character of a single farm.

Q. Is RYEA matcha tested for pesticides, heavy metals, or radiation?

A: Yes. Each year’s first harvest is tested by Japan Food Research Laboratories—a trusted third-party lab—for pesticide residue, heavy metals, and radiation. These tests are conducted by our supplier to ensure the matcha used in our products meets strict safety and quality standards. Test results are available on our website.

 Q. Is your matcha organic?

A: RYEA matcha is not certified organic, but it is sourced from farms that follow organic farming practices and are certified organic by Japanese authorities. We prioritize clean, sustainable agriculture and verify through lab testing that each harvest is free of harmful residues—even if it doesn’t carry an official organic label.

Q. What makes RYEA matcha smooth and flavorful?

A: We use only first flush (spring harvest), shade-grown leaves from Kagoshima—carefully selected at peak season for optimal taste and quality. The result is a vibrant green matcha with a naturally smooth, umami-rich flavor and a touch of balanced bitterness that’s true to authentic Japanese matcha. To suit different preferences, we offer three recipes:

Light Hot Matcha (Usucha): Milder, gentler flavor

Regular Hot Matcha (Usucha): Fuller, more robust flavor

Matcha Latte: Rich, velvety taste

Every cup of RYEA matcha reflects the skill, care, and intention behind the harvest. Through rigorous tasting and quality control, we ensure that each batch delivers the smooth, nuanced flavor that reflects our commitment to quality and care.
